I am about to declare bankruptcy and fear this coming out in background checks for jobs I will apply for in the future.

It bothered me to read that they don't actually inform you when they are using negative information from a background check against you. is there any way around this? should I request a copy of the background check from every company that a potential employer uses, if I don't get the job?

I applied to work for a bank once and while waiting for a segment of the interview, heard someone tell a person to their face "we don't do credit checks" and a short time later say to a colleague, "I just have to run these credit checks".

While not as troubling as your experience, I had my identity stolen in 1997 and in almost every credit check I do, some piece of bad data shows up. These days, it's mostly a 'former address' for a state in which I've never resided. Good advice and warning for everyone.

Dave...this is something I would have never in a millions years have thought of. My name isn't quite as common as yours....but then again, I don't know that yours really is either.

Anyways...thanks for blogging about this, because in this day and age of online database crossreferencing.....this sort of thing is probably more common than we think.
